Images of Early Mahayana Buddhist Guardians from Najie to Khotan——Notes on Two Dragon King Statues Unearthed In Hada and Khotan

Zhang Huiming(54)

Abstract:The Dragon King,an important image of the early Mahayana Dharma Protector system, was widely spread in the area affected by Gandhara culture and art in the 2nd to 4th century A.D.Najie and Khotan were the most important places for the spread of Mahayana sutras in the west and east of Pamir Plateau respectively. The Buddhist texts and images found in the two places indicate that the image of the Dragon King was influenced by various religions and cultures in the early stage of entering the Buddhist Dharma Protector system. At the same time, the image itself has complex cultural connotations and different artistic styles and other elements. This paper attempts to focus on the historical origin and context of the spread and development of early Mahayana Buddhism Dharma Protector images in the Western Regions through the analysis and interpretation of archaeological and historical documents and related studies of two Dragon King statues unearthed from the site of Shutuerqiu Pagoda Courtyard of Hada Buddhist Temple and Khotan area.

A New Study on Two Kinds of Paintings of Historical Tales of Khotan in Dunhuang Murals

Zhang Xiaogang(73)

Abstract:Khotan was a major transit station for the eastward spread of Buddhism, and was once the center of ancient Mahayana Buddhism. In order to better develop Buddhism, elevate the status of local Buddhism in the world Buddhist system, and promote the wide spread of Buddhism among the people,Khotan Buddhists have made up a large number of local supernatural legends and inspirational stories. From the 9th to the 10th century,Dunhuang had a close relationship with Khotan. Many statues related to Khotan appeared in Dunhuang murals.A group of pictures in the lower part of the Buddhist inspirational painting on the top of the corridor in Cave 454 of the Mogao Grottoes in the early Northern Song Dynasty may represent the legendary story of the birth of Di Ru,the ancestor of the King of Khotan. The picture entitled "when the prince of Khotan became a monk" in a Buddhist inspirational painting of the Five Dynasties on the top of the corridor in cave 126 of Mogao Grottoes may show the story of the child of Vijaya Vīrya, the king of Khotan, who was found after going missing and became a monk in a temple on Niutoushan mount, becoming the first shramana in Khotan who attained arhatship.

A Study on the Khotanese Donor Figures in Mogao Cave 4 at Dunhuang

Chen Juxia,Li Shanna(80)

Abstract:There is a four-person group of donor figures painted on the south side of the entrance wall in Mogao Cave 4,and the core figure is the first one,King of Khotan, who has been identified differently as Li Shengtian,Li Shengtian’s younger brother or Li Shengtian’s son Yunchi Shuluo. This paper confirms that it is Li Shengtian by refuting the other two opinions and supplementing new evidence.Three female donor figures following the king are Li Shengtian’s wife Queen Cao and his two daughters. In addition, the layout of the donor figures in Cave 4 suggests that the cave should be jointly constructed and finished by Family Cao of the Gui-yi-jun regime and the royal family of Khotan.

Pe’mīnai thau:Woolen Cloth of Ancient Khotan

Zhu Lishuang(87)

Abstract:The word pe’mīnai thau is commonly found in the Khotanese secular documents of the 8th and 9th centuries unearthed in Khotan.According to the latest interpretation of the text by Khotan language experts,it can be concluded that the word means woolen cloth,as explained earlier by Bailey. In recent years, scholars have proposed that pe’mīnai thau refers to silk cloth or cotton cloth, the article demonstrates that this still needs to be discussed. After the middle of the 8th century, the price of Khotan woolen cloth once soared, but when the Tibetans came to rule Khotan in the early 9th century, its price dropped again.
