Kosovo's unilateral declaration ofindependence on February 17 hastriggered different responses fromthe intemational community. Whilethe United States and major Europeancountries have recognized Kosovo as asovereign state, other countries, includingSerbia, Russia, Spain and Romania, havevoiced their opposition. Quite a few coun-tries have adopted a wait-and-see attitude,but are ready to choose between the twocamps.

Russia is the second most fervent oppo-nent only next to Serbia, from which Kosovobroke away. As is already known, the United
