At one time no one could travel on an English road faster than four miles an hour. That was the law until 1896.A man had to walk in front of a car which could not go faster than the man.At night the man had to carry a red lamp.

Once Charles Rolls brought a car from France to England, but he wanted to drive faster than four miles an hour.In order to have no trouble with the police,he had a talk with some of the police officers, who ordered their policemen to look the other way when the car came along the road. This was a good plan in the country, but not so easy to follow in the busy streets of London.

One night Rolls and some friends started from London on their journey to Cambridge. One of the men walked in front with the red lamp, but he walked as fast as he could. The police became very interested in walls and shop-fronts when they heard the car and not one of them saw it.

They reached a hill;but what a waste of time it was to drive down the hill at four miles an hour! Rolls was getting ready to jump into the car;but then he noticed a policeman who was not looking the other way.The slow car reached him.

“Good evening,” said the policeman, looking at the car.

“Good evening,” said Rolls, holding the lamp.

“One of these horseless things,” said the policeman, looking at it with interest.

“Yes,” said Rolls,and waited.

“Ive often wanted a ride in one;but of course policemen cant buy things like that.” he turned and looked hopefully in Rollss face.

“Jump in,” said Rolls.

“Thanks,” said the policeman, and did so.“Now,” he said, sitting down,“you can let it go just as you like down this hill. There isnt another policeman on this road for a mile and a half.”

In a great many cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work every day.In New York City, some bike riders have even formed a group called Bike for a Better City. They declare that if more people rode bicycles to work, there would be fewer automobiles in the downtown part of the city and so less dirty air from car engines.

For several years this group has been trying to get the city government to help bicycle riders. For example. They want the city to draw special lanes for bicycles only on some of the main streets, because when bicycle riders must use the same lanes as cars, there are accidents.Bike for a Better City feels that if there were special lanes, more people would use bikes.

But no bicycle lanes have been drawn. Not everyone thinks it is a good idea—they say it will slow the traffic. Some store owners on the main streets dont like the idea—they say that if there is less traffic, they will have less business.

The city government has not yet decided what to do.It wants to keep everyone happy. On weekends,Central Park—the largest place of open ground in New York—is closed to cars, and the roads may be used by bicycles only. But Bike for a Better City says that this is not enough and keeps fighting to get bicycle lanes downtown.

The British are among the worlds greatest readers of newspapers. Its been the custom ever since most people could read.

But why do people want to do nothing but read while traveling to work in a train?

Perhaps they are tired,or else they sit behind a newspaper to shut themselves off from the world. All the same, most men would notice a woman struggling with a heavy case and jump up to help her and a pretty girl sitting opposite wouldnt escape their attention either. In this case a paper is helpful because they can have a good look at her from behind it without her realizing.Perhaps they dont all do nothing but read. There are stories of girls and young men who met in the rush hour,go married, and went on traveling on the same train, hand in hand.

Dear Sir:

Being completely deaf myself,I read your report of the poor conditions of the deaf and mute (哑)who were gathering in New York begging.I supposed that it could not happen here in Australia.

However, two years later,I was having dinner in a restaurant in Sydney when a person entered and started handing out plastic jewellery (首饰) and a note to people at each table. The main idea of the note was,“I am unable to speak and hear in a world of voices and music.Would you kindly buy these things?” When he came to my table,I questioned him in sign language. He was a little surprised. Then he said in a low voice “dont talk”(which I could read from his lip movement) and moved away.

Please do not be taken in by those people. Please do not give them any money. They are neither deaf nor representative (代表) of the deaf. They make use of peoples pity, and what they are doing will do harm to all that has been achieved by the deaf in the last 20 years — including putting this practice to an end.

Truly yours,

John Williams

Every country tends to accept its own way of life as being the normal one and to praise or criticize(批评、责备)others,as they are similar to or different from it.And unfortunately, our picture of the people and the way of life of other countries is often a distorted (扭曲) one.

Here is a great argument in favor of foreign travel and learning foreign languages. It is only by traveling in a country and getting to know its inhabitants(居民)and their language that one can find out what a country and its people are really like. And how different the knowledge one gains this way frequently turns out to be from the second-hand information gathered from other sources! How often we find that the foreigners whom we thought to be such different people from ourselves are not very different at all!

Differences between peoples do,of course, exist and,one hopes, will always continue to do so.The world will be a dull place indeed when all the different nationalities behave exactly alike, and some people might say that we are rapidly approaching(走近)this state of affairs. With the much greater rapidity and ease of travel, there might seem to be some truth in this at least as far as Europe is concerned. However this may be,at least the greater ease of travel today has revealed (显示)to more people than ever before that the Englishman or Frenchman or German is not some different kind of animal from themselves.

72..Every country criticizes ways of life in other countries because they are_______.

A.distorted B.normal

C similar to each other D.different from its own 73.One who travels in a foreign country and learns its language will_______.

A.find out what its people are like

B.argue in favor of this country and the language

C.know the country and its people better

D.like its inhabitants and their language

74.The knowledge one gains by traveling in a foreign country is often_______.

A.from second-hand information

B.gathered from other sources than (from) its inhabitants

C.gained from the arguments about the country

D.different from what one had before the travel

75.In this passage, the author wants to say______.

A.differences between people will disappear because of easy travel

B.differences between people do exist even though different nationalities behave exactly alike

C.differences between people will always continue to exist and the world will be a dull place

D.differences between people will not exist as one hopes
