Celine: So I saw your picture on the calendar about a month ago and that you were going to be here. Its funny, because I read an article on your book and it sounded 1)vaguely familiar. Jesse: Vaguely?

Celine: Yes. But I didnt put it all together until I saw your photo. So...

Jesse: Did you have a chance to read it?

Celine: Yes, I... I was really, really surprised, as you can imagine. I mean, I had to read it twice, actually.

Jesse: Yeah?

Celine: Yeah.

Jesse: Comme ci comme ca?

Celine: No, I liked it. Its very romantic. I usually dont like that, but its really well-written. Its really well-written. Congratulations.

Jesse: Thank you.

Celine: Wait.

Jesse: What?

Celine: Before we go anywhere, I have to ask you...

Jesse: Sure. What?

Celine: Did you show up in Vienna that December?

Jesse: Did you?

Celine: No, I couldnt. But did you? I need to know. Its so

important to me.

Jesse: Why, if you didnt?

Celine: Well, did you?

Jesse: No.

Celine: Thank God you didnt.

Jesse: Oh, my God.

Celine: Thank God you didnt.

Jesse: I mean I didnt and you didnt. I mean if one of us had showed up there alone, that would have sucked.

Celine: I know, I know, I was so concerned with that. I always felt horrible about not being there, but I couldnt. You know, my grandma died a few days before. And she was buried that day, December 6th.

Jesse: The one in 2)Budapest?

Celine: Yes. You remember that?

Jesse: Yeah, I remember everything.

Celine: Of course, it was in your book. But anyway, I was about to fly to Vienna, you know, and we heard the news about her, and of course I had to go to the funeral with my parents.

Jesse: Yeah, Im sorry to hear that.

Celine: I know. But you werent there anyway. Wait. Why werent you there? I would have been there if I could have. I made plans. And wait, you better have a good reason. What? Oh, no. No, you were there, werent you? Oh, no, thats terrible! I know Im laughing, but I dont mean it. Did you hate me? You mustve hated me. Have you been hating me all this time? You have.

Jesse: No.

Celine: Yes, you have.

Jesse: No.

Celine: But you cant hate me now, right? I mean, my grandma...

Jesse: I dont hate you. Come on. Its no big deal, all right? I flew all the way over there, you blew the thing off. And my lifes been a big 3)nosedive since then, but its not a problem.

Celine: No, youre kidding.

Jesse: No, Im kidding.

Celine: Dont say that. I cant believe it. You must have been so angry with me. Im so sorry. I really wanted to be there, more than anything in the world. I swear…

Jesse: Honestly…

Celine: I swear…

Celine: You cant be angry, my grandmother...

Jesse: I know. I know. I honestly thought that something like that might have happened. I was definitely 4)bummed, but…mostly I was just mad we hadnt exchanged any phone numbers or any information.

Celine: I know. That was so stupid. No way to get in touch. I didnt even know your last name.

Jesse: Nothing to go on. I know, I know. I mean, remember we were both afraid if we started writing and calling that it would slowly, you know, fade out.

Celine: Yeah, it definitely wasnt a slow fade.

Jesse: No, it sure wasnt.

Celine: I know, we wanted to pick it up where we left off.

Jesse: Which would have been fine if it had worked.

Celine: Yes, a good idea.

Jesse: Oh well.
