China-UK Ties Enter “Golden Era”

October 20, London: Chinese President Xi Jinping during a state visit to the UK from October 19th to 23rd. Before setting off, President Xi said in an interview with Reuters that he looked forward to the beginning of a “golden era” of comprehensive strategic partnership between China and the UK. The UK answered by declaring itself as Chinas best partner in the West. During the visit, President Xi met important members of the royal family, and held talks with British Prime Minister David Cameron. The two witnessed the signing of bilateral cooperation documents which involved finance, customs, local cooperation, emerging industries, sustainable development and other fields. About 40 billion pounds sterling worth of trade and investment deals were signed, covering the fields of innovative industries, retails, energy, health and technology, financial services, aerospace and education. Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation Week

October 19, Beijing: Premier Li Keqiang attends the first National Week of Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation, talking to a domestically developed intelligent robot ”Xiaodu” designed by Baidu, Inc. Mass entrepreneurship and innovation was proposed by Premier Li Keqiang for the first time during the Summer Davos Forum in September 2014. The concept emphasizes on economic development driven by scientific and technological innovation. Achievements will be exhibited during the National Week of Mass Entrepreneurship and Innovation every year in October. China Daily

Xi Congratulates Kim on WPK Anniversary

On October 9, General Secretary Xi Jinping of the Communist Party of China(CPC) Central Committee sent a message to Kim Jong-un, the first secretary of the Workers Party of Korea (WPK), to congratulate him on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the WPK. Liu Yunshan, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and secretary of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, paid a visit to DPRK, and on October 10, he watched the military parade celebrating WPKs 70th anniversary with Kim Jong-un in Pyongyang. During his visit, Liu also met Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme Peoples Assembly of DPRK. The two sides had friendly exchanges on the history and development of the traditional friendship between China and DPRK and the two fraternal political parties. Xinhua

West-East Electricity Transfer

October 13, Yuncheng, Shanxi Province: Workers in the Yellow River basin carrying out high-voltage transmission line construction, as part of West-East electricity transmission project. The project aims to develop the rich power resources in western regions of China and transports them to the power-scarce eastern regions, turning the western regions asset into economic advantage while promoting economic development of the whole country. Since the project was officially launched in 1996, it has supplied more and more power year after year. In the first half of this year, the project supplied over 79.8 billion kilowatt-hours (kwh). Crop-Drying

September 11, Shangrao, Jiangxi Province: Huangling Village of Wuyuan County, labeled as “the most beautiful symbol of China,” is famous for the “autumn crop-drying.” The sixth day of the sixth month on the lunar calendar is the traditional Crop-drying Festival of Han and Bouyei ethnic groups. Villagers dry their colorful crops in bamboo baskets under the roofs. As fruits ripen, the Chongyang Festival arrives on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, and crop-drying reaches its peak. The typical Anhui-style houses and the colorful drying crops merge into a concentrated version of the famous painting, Along the River During the Qingming Festival. CFP

Lang Lang Shines at Echo Klassik

October 18, Berlin: At the 2015 Echo Klassik awarding ceremony, international piano superstar Lang Lang won “instrumentalist of the year(piano)” for his album Mozart released in 2014. Lang Lang is the first Chinese pianist employed by Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the worlds best orchestras, and five most famous American orchestras. He has won many prestigious awards for classical music. In 2013, he was named as the United Nations Messenger of Peace. This made him the youngest and first Chinese Peace Messenger in UN history. IC

Mens Basketball Back to the Championship

October 3, Changsha, Hunan Province: In the 2015 FIBA Asian Basketball Championship finals, Chinese Mens basketball team won a 78:67 victory over the Filipino team. The last time they claimed the trophy was four years ago. As the Asian champion, Chinese mens basketball team automatically qualifies to participate in the 2016 Rio Olympics. Yi Jianlian was named MVP of the tournament. He entered CBA when he was 15 years old. In 2007, he was chosen by Milwaukee Bucks of NBA. Since then he has served in a number of NBA teams. In 2012, he returned to Guangdong Tigers of CBA. Guangdong reclaimed the CBA championship that year. Xinhua

Pearl River Full of Life

October 20, Liuzhou, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region: Artificial reproduction and releasing activity of fish species is carried out at the upstream of the Pearl River. Law enforcement officials of the fishery administration and volunteers released 750,000 fish of all kinds into the Pearl River to improve water condition. The Ministry of Agriculture, local government and fishery departments organize breeding and releasing activities every year. The target of 2015 is to release 34 billion aquatic larvae. Apart from releasing fish fries, other methods for improving water condition include setting closed seasons for fishing and deepening the mass understanding of closed seasons, so as to promote a sustainable development of fishery resources. Chongyang Celebrations

October 21, Jinhua, Zhejiang Province: In the Siping Village of Tangxi County, overseas students gather in the cultural hall of the village to experience Chinese lifestyle and to celebrate Chongyang Festival with the local elderly. As Chinese and Western cultures fuse, many traditional Chinese festivals, such as the Chongyang Festival, are gradually becoming known to foreign friends. Chongyang Festival, also called the Double Ninth Festival, is a Chinese holiday for the elderly. In 2006, Chongyang Festival was included on the first group of Chinas intangible cultural heritage. This year, the population of Chinese over 60 years old has reached 210 million, accounting for 15.5 percent of the total. The aging population and diminished family structure make it extremely difficult to provide support to elders. IC
