功能对等理论视域下的《将仲子》三译本比较研究

《将仲子》是《诗经》里面《国风》中的一首古诗,主要讲述了一位女子劝说情郎不要翻越墙头相会,以免自己招致父兄责骂,邻里闲话。全诗由女主人公内心独白式的情语构成。虽从字面上只见女主人公的告求和疑惧,但诗行中却历历可见“仲子”的神情音容:那试图逾里、逾墙、逾园来会的鲁莽,那被劝止引发的不快,以及女主人公唯恐惊动自己的父母、兄弟、邻居而产生的既爱又怕、既惊又惧的情态,俱可于诗中得之。我国古代诗论,特别推重诗的“情中景”、“景中情”,《将仲子》所创造的,正是这种情中见景的高妙诗境。

本文以奈达的功能对等理论为基础对《将仲子》三译本进行比较研究。三译本如下:

Version 1

I Beg You, Zhongzi

I beg you,Zhongzi,

Dont climb into our yard,

Dont break our willows!

Not that I mind about the willows,

But I am afraid of my father and mother.

Yes, much as I love you,

I am afraid of what my parents will say.

奈达的形式对等要求译文贴近原文的结构。《将仲子》共分三节,每节七句。纵观三个译本,只有译本一( 杨戴合译)依然保留了这样的整体结构,与原文本达到了最大程度的形式对等。

原文中的“仲子”,很多资料将其解释为“二哥”,倘若将其白话文意“二哥”翻译成英文,相信广大西方读者是无论如何也不会想到将其与情郎联系到一块。笔者认为“仲子”还应该是女主人公对自己情郎的一种昵称,所以此时完全可以避免直译,采取意译的方法以便于西方的读者理解此诗。译文二在这方面处理的较为灵活,将其意译为“my dear sweet heart”,这样西方读者一眼便可分辨出诗中女主人公和翻墙的男士之间的情侣关系了,从而更能体会原诗中所传达的情感。这样的处理无形中和奈达在论述动态对等时,强调的“旨在达至完全自然的表达,保持与原语讯息之间最自然的对等”一致。而译文一和译文三都采用了不同程度的直译方法,未将文化背景知识融合进去的直译,因而不能实现与原文的动态对等。

原文中,随着女主人公“勿逾我里、勿逾我墙、勿逾我园”的告求,男子的形象也由远至近,一步步靠近女主人公,而女主人公此时的惊惧更甚,从畏父母到畏诸兄逐至到后来的畏人之多言。在这里的描述中有两个层层推进,男子的距离上的推进,以及女主人公感情上的推进。所以在译文中最好也能体现出这一点。译文二在表现男子层层推进的意象方面做得较为出色,“climb,steal,jump”三个动词将男子逐渐逼近女主人公的动态意象刻画的翔实生动。译文一和译文三则都只用了一个动词,虽然其后搭配的介词发生了变化,但是总体效果没有译文二的三个动词所凸显出来的效果好。

通过以上对三个译本的比较分析,我们发现三个译本各有千秋。综合起来看,虽然也有诸多不完善之处,但译文二的处理更出彩些,不仅用词考究而且最后一小节还是用了头韵的修辞手法,更好的实现了原文和译文的动态对等从而很好地将原文中字里行间的表意凸显出来。这也启示了我们,在汉诗英译过程中不能过分追求形式对等而不顾原文神韵的表达,能做到形神兼似自然最好,做不到的话,宁愿牺牲形式也要准确传达原文想要表达的意思,也即奈达强调的“意义的对等必须优先于文体上的对应”。
