Bailey: What is the meaning of life? Are we here for a reason? Is there a point to any of this? First, I had no idea what was going on. I, I couldn’t see a thing. It was warm. There was my mother. Every day I had fun. Was having fun the point? The whole point? No, it couldn’t be that simple. (The dog-catcher people come.)

And then it was over. No more fun. It seemed like such a short life. I mean, what exactly did I do? There was some playing. There was some eating. I dug in the dirt. But when I really thought about it, it didn’t add up to much…I was back! And I was a1)puppy again, alive and ready to ask the big questions, to dig for answers…um, where am I?

1) puppy ['pʌpɪ] n.

Ethan: Oh! Hey, hey, hey! Bailey, Bailey, Bailey, Bailey!

Hannah: Woah!

Ethan: Sorry, sorry, sorry. That was the dog. That wasn’t me. I wouldn’t do that.

Hannah: Oh…OK, well, maybe you should teach your dog some manners.

Ethan: I’ve been trying. He’s, uh, he’s not too smart.

Hannah: Really? Wow, did you hear what he said about you? You look pretty smart to me. Oh, yeah, such intelligent eyes.

Bailey: My2)butt3)itches.

Hannah: What’s your name, handsome?

Ethan: He’s, uh, he’s Bailey. Bailey, yeah.

Hannah: Bailey. Now you seem like a very good dog, Bailey.

Ethan: Yeah.

Stallholder: Excuse me? Nice job. (Giving Hannah her prize)

Hannah: Oh, thank you.

Ethan: You’re really good at that.

Hannah: Thanks.

Ethan: Like, really good.

Hannah: Yeah?

Ethan: I was watching you over there.

Hannah: See you.

Ethan: Hey, uh, if we never speak again, I just wanna take back what I said before about my dog not being smart. He’s actually really smart—4)definitely smarter than me. You wanna, uh, you wanna get a hot dog or something? Popcorn?

Hannah: Sure.

词组:take back

● These library books are long overdue…I really need to take them back.

● Emily said she would never take her husband back again.

Ethan: Keep that for me, OK, Bailey?

Grandma: Bye, Ethan.

Grandpa: Drive safe. See you, Ethan. (Ethan drives off and Bailey wants to chase the car.)

Mom: No, Bailey, stay.

Grandpa: You got him, honey?

Bailey: Stay? We’re playing5)fetch! (Bailey breaks loose and runs away.)

Mom: Bailey!

Bailey: It’s been so long since we’ve played! (Bailey runs across the field to catch up with Ethan’s car, which takes Ethan by surprise.)

Ethan: Bailey!

Bailey: I like this…new version…of fetch.

Ethan: You’re crazy—you know that, boss dog?

Bailey: Maybe not…drive so far next time.

Ethan: Take care of things around here for me, OK, boy? I’ll be back soon.6)Promise. Come on. Go on. Go home. (Ethan drives off.) Bailey: Humans are complicated. They do things dogs can’t understand. Like leave. Ethan and I were meant to be together. But if there was no Ethan, what was the point of my being here?

除了这里出现的no(不行)、stay(等着,别动)和fetch(取物,接球)以外,常用的训练指令还包括come(来)、go(去)、sit(坐)、stand(起)、down(卧)、quiet(安静)等,对顺利完成指令的动物别忘了夸奖一句good boy/girl(好孩子)。

Bailey: Had I been here before? I was so happy to leave the town behind. My nose was full of fresh new smells. And then there are the smells you never forget. Train.7)Moss. Trees. Horse. Garbage. It was horse-dog! Could it be the same? Ah, it was the same. Could it mean Ethan was here, too? (The adult Ethan is talking to someone else.)

Ethan? That can’t be him. Is that him? It is him! It’s him! Yes! Yes, it’s him! (Bailey runs to Ethan happily.)

It’s me! Boss dog! Bailey, Bailey, Bailey!8)Doodle dog!

Ethan: Hey! Where’d you come from?

Bailey: After all these lives, I’d actually found him. I found Ethan.

(Ethan takes Bailey home and feeds him.)

Ethan: I’m gonna make a bet you’re hungry.

2) butt [bʌt] n. 屁股

3) itch [ɪtʃ] v.

4) defnitely ['defɪnɪtlɪ] adv.

5) fetch [fetʃ] n.

6) promise ['prɒmɪs] v. & n.

7) moss [mɒs] n.

8) doodle ['duːd(ə)l] n. <

Don’t look at me like that. You can’t stay here. You gotta go home. You belong to somebody.

Bailey: Home. Yes, yes, I’m home.

Ethan: Go home, dog. Go home.

(Ethan finally adopts Bailey and names him“Buddy.” One day, Bailey comes across a woman with a familiar smell. He finds out that she is Hannah’s daughter. Hannah brings Bailey back and meets Ethan.)

Ethan: Must have been tough on you, losing your husband after all those years.

Hannah: Yeah, it made me miss my daughter a lot. And then, with the new baby coming, I thought Rachel and Miguel could really use the help.

Ethan: Yeah. How long you get to stay for?

Hannah: Uh, well, I’m…I’m not visiting, Ethan. I moved back about a month ago.

Ethan: You, you did? Welcome home.

Hannah: Thanks. Well, this place is still the same.

Ethan: Yeah.

Bailey: Oh, come on.

Hannah: So, what about you? You, you never met anyone or…

Ethan: Never found the right fit. I’m really stubborn.

Hannah: I know that. When you put your mind to something, that was that.

Ethan: Yeah. That’s good for getting things done. It’s not so good for relationships.

Hannah: OK, well…

Bailey: OK, here we go. They’re gonna9)lick faces.

Hannah: Well, look, this was really nice. I gotta go. Thank you, Ethan.

Bailey: Wait, what? Oh, come on!

Ethan: Hey, thanks for bringing back my dog.

Hannah: You’re welcome. Bye.

Ethan: Hey, Hannah. I owe you an apology. For what happened to us. Back then.

Hannah: Well, don’t worry. It was a long, long time ago.

Ethan: No. I pushed you away. And I was…I was really mad at the world. And I just want you to know that not a day goes by that I don’t10)kick myself for doing that. You think, uh, it’d be crazy if…we did something together?

Hannah: Are you asking me out on a11)date? Ethan: Well, I just think that I’d be an12)all-time fool if I just watch you drive away. Bailey: Enough talking. Use your nose.

Hannah: Then don’t.

And I just want you to know that not a day goes by that I don’t kick myself for doing that.

I kicked myself for letting that opportunity slip by.

Bailey: There was one thing I still wanted. I wanted him to know it was me—that I was Bailey. (Doing an old trick)

Hannah: Wait, didn’t Bailey used to do that? Ethan: Yeah. It’s a dog thing.

Bailey: Bailey. I’m Bailey. There’s gotta be a way. (Bailey smells something.) Hmm, wait. That’s familiar. I smelled…me. (Bailey finds Ethan’s old football.)

Ethan: Where did you find that? You go play, all right? Gotta get back. What? What do you want? All right, Buddy. You wanna go for the13)showstopper? You wanna try it? You wanna get it? Ready?

Bailey: I am ready.

Ethan: OK. Go! (Bailey does their old fetch trick.)

Where did you learn how to do that, Buddy? You are really starting to14)freak me out, boss dog.

Bailey: Yes, Ethan! That’s right! I’m your boss dog! I’m Bailey! Say it!

Ethan: Boss dog? Are you the boss dog? No. Bailey: Yes. It’s me, Ethan. It’s me.

Ethan: Bailey? Boss dog…Bailey, Bailey, Bailey, Bailey, Bailey…

Bailey: So, in all my lives as a dog, here’s what I’ve learned:

Have fun, obviously.

Whenever possible, find someone to save and save them.

Lick the ones you love.

Don’t get all sad-faced about what happened and15)scrunchy-faced about what could. Just be here now. BE HERE NOW.

That’s a dog’s purpose.
