Broken Hill was recently awarded one of Australias rare National Heritage listings, but is that reason enough to make the journey? We asked local mayor Wincen Cuy to give us some solid reasons to visit.

Broken Hill, in western New South Wales, is hardly up there as a tourist destination of international renown. Its miles from anywhere, boiling hot and lacks the more chi-chi elements that often make a destination popular—for example high-end restaurants, beautiful beaches, posh accommodation. But Broken Hills reputation is growing with its recent National Heritage Listing award. So should you go there?

We asked Broken Hill mayor and long-term resident Wincen Cuy to tell us what makes Broken Hill so great. These are the five reasons he gave us to visit (in his own words):

Perfect light

Broken Hill offers a breathtaking range of diverse landscapes to discover and explore, from lush wetlands and lakes to spectacular flat topped mesas and shimmering gibber desert plains. The vibrant colours and perfect light have drawn film-makers and artists here to capture its special quality for decades. It packs a powerful punch—this dark, red soil contrasting with clear blue skies. From the wonders of the day comes an amazing light show at night.

The locals

We are always happy to greet people from “away”. In fact we love it when people come to town to visit. We are a friendly mob (民眾), salt-of-the-earth people who make you feel welcome. And we are pretty proud of our city.

The Palace Hotel

The home of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and just a great Broken Hill iconic (标志性的) pub. You can star in your own movie in the centre of town. It is a world-renowned landmark and a good water hole for those nice warm days.

The living desert and sculpture symposium

Located 9km from the city, the sanctuary features 12 massive sandstone sculptures by artists from around the world as well as local artist Badger Bates. The sanctuary displays the breathtaking beauty of the real outback (內地). Explore along paths which wind through a tranquil landscape of profound significance to local Indigenous culture.

While Beijings Chaoyang residents have earned the title of the “fifth largest intelligence agency” in the world, their peers in Xicheng district prove they are no second.

A total of 11,937 tips have been reported to police by Xicheng residents in the first half of this year, leading to crackdown of 165 criminal cases and 558 public security cases. Among them, 72 were related to terrorism cases, Beijing Youth Daily reported on Sunday.

According to an official from Xichengs politics and law committee, more than 70,000 residents in the district are involved in community work which includes reporting any suspicious activity to the police, with about 50,000 real-name registered volunteers and the rest include security guards, cleaning workers, etc.

The volunteers are often seen and easily spotted on the street with their red armband or red hat.

Most of these residents are aged 58 to 65 and women take up 70 percent of the total number, gaining the group the nickname Xicheng dama (middle-aged women).

The group members have been allocated to different duties such as patrolling, publicity, guarding and security check, according to their gender, age and physical conditions.

Meanwhile, a manual have been given to them as a guide to deal with various situations. In the “clues to report” section, seven kinds of suspicious people, three types of suspicious articles and three types of suspicious incidents are listed to help them identify the clues. All the phone numbers of 28 police stations in the district are also listed in the manual.

In April, a series of theft cases happened in an office building in Xicheng. After identifying the suspect, policemen informed the nearby volunteers and social workers about the features of the accused. Days later, a whistle-blower reported to the police the where abouts of the man.

From January to April, 753 Xicheng residents have been rewarded for providing important information and the amount reached has 560,000 yuan ($90,216).

While Chaoyang residents made a name by reporting celebrities drug-taking cases, Xicheng saw no such cases in the key places of the district. Among the 225 drug-related cases solved by Xicheng police in the first half of this year, only five percent took place within the district, which can be attributed to years of efforts by Xicheng dama.

“We conducted a systematic training for all the community policemen and the social workers and volunteers last July and instruction training for the directors,” said Wang Hao, a police officer from Xicheng police bureau. “The training was aimed at strengthening the social power to prevent crime and to ensure that every member of the group knew how to collect information.” The training has proved effective in the past year as anti-terrorism information reached 72 in the thousands of clues provided by Xicheng residents.

40. How do you interpret the sentence “their peers in Xicheng district prove they are no second” in para.1?

A. Residents in Xicheng are more capable in collecting information than those in Chaoyang.

B. The capability of collecting information in Xicheng is about the same as that in Chaoyang.

C. The capability of collecting information in Xicheng ranks the second, just behind that in Chaoyang.

D. The capability of collecting information in Chaoyang ranks the 5th while Xicheng ranks the second.

41. Which group is the most prominent according to this article?

A. Those security guards.

B. Those cleaning workers.

C. Those middle-aged women.

D. Those whistle-blowers.

42. Whats the function of the “clues to report” section in a manual?

B. There are some instructions which are helpful for identifying the clues.

C. All the suspicious are listed in this section to help the volunteers.

D. Phone numbers of police station are listed to ensure contact between police and volunteers.

It is well that young men should begin at the beginning and occupy the most subordinate positions. Many of the leading businessmen of Pittsburgh had a serious responsibility thrust upon them at the very threshold of their career. They were introduced to the broom, and spent the first hours of their business lives sweeping out the office. I notice we have janitors and janitresses now in offices, and our young men unfortunately miss that salutary branch of business education. But if by chance the professional sweeper is absent any morning, the boy who has the genius of the future partner in him will not hesitate to try his hand at the broom. It does not hurt the newest comer to sweep out the office if necessary. I was one of those sweepers myself.

Assuming that you have all obtained employment and are fairly started, my advice to you is “aim high”. I would not give a fig for the young man who does not already see himself the partner or the head of an important firm. Do not rest content for a moment in your thoughts as head clerk, or foreman, or general manager in any concern, no matter how extensive. Say to yourself, “My place is at the top.” Be king in your dreams.

And here is the prime condition of success, the great secret: concentrate your energy, thought, and capital exclusively upon the business in which you are engaged. Having begun in one line, resolve to fight it out on that line, to lead in it, adopt every improvement, have the best machinery, and know the most about it.

The concerns which fail are those which have scattered their capital, which means that they have scattered their brains also. They have investments in this, or that, or the other, here there, and everywhere. “Dont put all your eggs in one basket.” is all wrong. I tell you to “put all your eggs in one basket, and then watch that basket.” Look round you and take notice, men who do that not often fail. It is easy to watch and carry the one basket. It is trying to carry too many baskets that breaks most eggs in this country. He who carries three baskets must put one on his head, which is apt to tumble and trip him up. One fault of the American businessman is lack of concentration.

To summarize what I have said: aim for the highest; never enter a bar room; do not touch liquor, or if at all only at meals; never speculate; never indorse beyond your surplus cash fund; make the firms interest yours; break orders always to save owners; concentrate; put all your eggs in one basket, and watch that basket; expenditure always within revenue; lastly, be not impatient, for as Emerson says, “no one can cheat you out of ultimate success but yourselves.”

44. What can we learn from the article?

A. The authors suggestion to everyone is “aim high”.

B. Many leading businessmen of Pittsburgh spent the first hours of their business living on sweeping out the office.

C. Lack of concentration is the fault of the American businessman.

D. In order to succeed, you shouldnt put all your eggs in one basket.

45. The underlined word “threshold” in the first paragragh is closest in meaning to            .

A. end      B. process

C. beginning   D. procedure

46. How is the last but one paragraph mainly developed?

A. By making comparisons.

B. By presenting findings.

C. By setting classifications.

D. By using a metaphor to express the opinion.

47. Whats the best title of the passage?

A. Sarting from the most subordinate position

B. The road to success

C. Aim for the highest

D. Concentrating on the business in which you are busy

Ernest Miller Hemingway was an American author and journalist. His economical and understated style had a strong influence on 20th-century fiction, while his life of adventure and his public image influenced later generations. Hemingway produced most of his work between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s, and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. He published seven novels, six short story collections, and two non-fiction works. Three novels, four collections of short stories, and three non-fiction works were published posthumously. Many of these are considered classics of American literature. The Sun Also Rises, Hemingways first novel, was published in 1926.

He and his wife divorced after he returned from the Spanish Civil War where he had been a journalist, and after which he wrote For Whom the Bell Tolls. Shortly after the publication of The Old Man and the Sea in 1952. A sensational bestseller when it appeared in 1986, The Garden of Eden is the last uncompleted novel of Ernest Hemingway, which he worked on intermittently from 1946 until his death in 1961. Set on the Cte dAzur in the 1920s, it is the story of a young American writer, David Bourne, his glamorous wife, Catherine, and the dangerous, erotic game they play when they fall in love with the same woman. The Garden of Eden was more of an environment than an actual location on earth. There was a real geographic place on the planet called “The Garden of Eden” but what made that place special, what made it the Garden of Eden was its environment and not its physical location. The word ‘Eden means: spot, moment, presence, open door, delight. So, the Garden of Eden was the spot for the moment where the presence of God provided an open door to heaven. Its where heaven met earth. Before the Garden of Eden came to earth it was in heaven and after Adam sinned it went back to heaven from whence it came. Remember Im primarily talking about an environment not necessarily the physical location. In the following scriptures God is referring to Lucifer, heres what He said, “Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering... Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.” Eze 28:13-14.This shows that the Garden of Eden was in heaven BEFORE the fall. Next we have the following scriptures, “...To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.” Rev 2:7.The word “Paradise” here means “Enclosed Garden” and notice carefully the presence of the Tree of Life. I submit to you that this is none other than the Garden of Eden back in heaven where it was located before God brought it to earth. In conclusion, the physical location where the Garden of Eden was located, no one knows exactly where it was or where it is today. The actual Garden of Eden thats back in heaven where it belongs and where every born again child of God will get to experience its beauty and glory forever!

48. Which unfinished novel was written by the world-famous writer Ernest Hemingway?

A. For Whom the Bell Tolls.

B. The Garden of Eden.

C. The Sun Also Rises.

D. The Old Man and the Sea.

49. What made the Garden of Eden special?

A. The physical location.

B. The geographic place.

C. The presence of God.

D. The environment.

50. What does the word Paradise mean in the novel The Garden of Eden?

A. Enclosed Garden.       B. The leaves of Life.

C. Beauty and glory.     D. The precious stone.

四、任務型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

Chronic disorganization (慢性失序症) occurs when one is habitually disorganized over a long period, which means the person is constantly unsystematic in how he conducts life and business. One suffering from this problem may find relief in the fact that it isnt actually a disease or even an “official” disorder. Its the continued lack of organization in ones life.

Someone may become addicted to collecting a certain thing yet never organize the collection as it grows out of control. This can especially be a problem for those with a lot of time and money at hand, yet the problem can be serious for any type of person in a wide variety of situation.

Ones personal attitude can often be a big part of why the chronic disorganization exists. Once the attitude of acceptance about being a “slob” is in someones head, its hard to remove. If someone tells himself that he is a slob, he will likely live up to that self-image created by him or by those around him.

One first receives true awareness of the disorder of chronic disorganization when it starts to negatively affect relationships with friends and family members. Everybody becomes affected by this situation, especially those sharing living places with the one involved.

The National Study Group for Chronic Disorganization (HSGCD) recommends that one get help through a professional organizer. The study found that all of the subjects in the study had problems with making decisions. There were varied reasons given for this problem of decision-making. Among them were fears and prioritizing issues. Research is ongoing for the link between problems in decision-making and chronic disorganization.

Chronic disorganization often begins with situational disorganization, something most people experience at some point. Someone who has lost someone significant to him may start to be troubled by disorganization after a divorce. Someone who experienced changes in life and in his career may intend to let things like organization and order fall by the wayside. However, one doesnt instantly have chronic disorganization.

“If youre going through hell, keep going.” Thats an old saying thats true about ones struggles with chronic disorganization. Every person has the power to change within himself. Its a matter of staying organized, one day at a time. Those who have left chronic disorganization in the past have often done so by promising to stay organized simply for that single day.

五、书面表达(满分25分)

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的作文。

Would you add your parents on WeChat? This has become one of the biggest questions facing young Chinese in an age of unprecedented (史无前例的) digital interconnectedness. In a poll conducted by the Huashang Bao newspaper in Xian, 17 of 40 young people polled said they have added their parents on WeChat, but 14 blocked them from seeing their “friends circles”—a space where friends can share pictures and posts with one another. Of the 20 parents polled, 12 have added their children on WeChat but only could see his or her childs updates. The other 11 parents had been blocked by their kids from having access to their friends circles despite being able to send them messages on WeChat.

Some children say theyre not comfortable with their parents combing through their everyday activities and photos, as their parents either dont approve of the things they do for fun, or would constantly worry over what they consider unsafe or inappropriate behavior. Others say their friends circles are for friends of a similar age with similar interests, and their parents wouldnt understand. However, some say parents feelings would be hurt if they discovered their children restricted their access to this part of their social life.

So, what is your opinion? Should young people share their everyday activities with their parents through social media like WeChat?

【寫作内容】

1. 以约30个词概括短文大意;

2. 以约120个词就“Should parents be allowed to pick up on social media?”这一主题谈谈你的看法,内容包括:

1) 年轻人应该通过微信等社交媒体,跟父母分享他们的日常活动么?

2) 请说明你的理由。

【写作要求】

1. 可以参照阅读材料内容,但不得直接引用原文中的句子;

2. 作文中不能出现真实姓名和学校名称。

五、One possible version:

A recent survey has been carried out about whether young people should add their parents on WeChat. Quite a lot of them are unwilling to, for fear that their parents should know about their privacy.

As far as I am concerned, WeChat provides us with a platform where we can share with our parents their daily activities. As a convenient and quick way, WeChat can keep parents informed of what they have been thinking, thus improving mutual understanding.

It makes sense to allow our parents to pick up on social media. There are some reasons accounting for my arguments. First of all, wholeheartedly devoted to us and equipped with abundant experience, our parents are the first resources we are not to neglect when faced with difficulties and adversity. Anyway we shouldnt underestimate the role our parents play in improving our social skills. Besides, blocking our parents on WeChat is likely to hurt our parents. More importantly, by taking full advantage of social network, a generation gap can be narrowed, which in turn contributes to harmonious environment of our family and the society.
