From Context Model to Translator Model:A Qualitative Case Study of Translator’s Decision on the Translated Text

TIAN Hai-long

Abstract:Translation is no longer considered as direct transition of codes from one language to another, but a process in which the translator plays his role. This paper explores how the translator plays his role in the actual translation of Fariclough’sLanguage and Globalization. The research method is qualitative, while the researcher(the translator in this case)is the research tool.Reflecting on his translation of certain technical terms, the translator summarizes certain factors he considers relevant for his decision. The paper proposes, based on van Dijk’s context model,a translator model,to explain the way the translator translates the book.

CHEN Yong

Abstract:Starting from the eight principles of critical discourse analysis,it is found that translation norms and their studies are controlled by power relations and ideology, historical, interpretative, mediated, and socially constitutive as a social practice. These features are further discussed in terms of some key notions of postmodernism, and five postmodernist characteristics of translation norms(studies)are identified, namely, diversity and instability, indeterminacy, mediation, relation, and criticality. This approach can help with a fuller understanding of translation norms and their studies.

AStudy of English Translation of Mood Structure in Chinese Political Speech

LIU Chun-mei

Abstract:With the interpersonal function of systemic functional linguistics as the theoretical framework, this paper, based on the English version of political speechBe Trustworthy Friends and Sincere Partners ForeverinXin Jinping:The Governance of China I,discusses the English translation of the mood structure in Chinese political speech. It finds that the subjects in mood structure are altered, the value of modal verbs is reduced, and some modal adjuncts are transformed into tense in the process of translation. From the viewpoint of discourse, the translator enjoys a more flexible choice to translate from the perspective of mood structure than from that of content.

A Discourse Study of the Reception of English Translation of CPC Central Committee Literature Based on a Case in Chinese and American News Reports

LIU Xuan

Abstract:From the perspective of critical discourse analysis, translation takes part in social practice in terms of the production, distribution and consumption of translated texts. This paper focuses on the consumption of a translated text of CPC central committee literature, namely,Xi Jinping’s addresses on the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening-up,by making an intertextual analysis to see how the translated text is adopted and received in Chinese and American news reports. It is found that in Chinese news, the translated text is adopted frequently and represented in accordance with the original text, continuously showing positive interpretations. While American media seldom adopts complete translated expressions, but often pieces up its fragments to cause misunderstandings. These different discursive outcomes thus produced in Chinese and American news reveal the weakness and misuse of the translated text, the latter of which indicates a dilemma of its reception. It also shows that translation takes part in the social practice in both direct and indirect ways and with both present and future effects.

The Situation of Lexis

DING Jian-xin

Abstract:This paper examines the situation of lexical studies in linguistics of 20th century from the perspective of academic history. The lexical studies is considered as Cinderella in the study of modern linguistics in the past one hundred years. This study is initiated by the London school and misunderstood by American structuralism, inherited by functionalist scholars, and it has been neglected in the mainstream linguistics. The development of computer technology in the second half of the 20th century made it possible for corpus-based studies of vocabulary and grammar to enlighten what is not seen in the traditional grammar research. The traditional domain of syntax is invaded by lexical hordes.

Marginal Discourse Analysis:An Investigation of Prisoner Discourse through Field Work

ZHAO Chang-you&LIU Cheng-yu

Abstract:The prisoner discourse is a kind of anti-language.Interpreting the properties of the prisoner discourse, particularly the prisoner’s expletive discourse based on the theories of specific niche and group living from the perspective of ecology of language reveals that the discourse is a kind of discursive variant of narrow niche and small population size,it is,therefore,an extreme form of marginal discourse. However, the marginal discourses of narrow niche are frequently used by the prisoners and popular among them due to its intraspecific or interspecific group living for increasing the competitive capacities to out-compete other discourses. Some of the prisoner’s expletive discourses are competitive and popular enough to have been or will be adopted by the official discourse as mainstream discourses.

Animal Trauma and Becoming Animal:On Anti-anthropocene Narrative in The White Bone

MENG Qing-fen&JIANG Li-fu

Abstract:The concept of the ant hropocene discloses the absurdity of human exceptionism and the devastating consequence of ant hropocentrism. The White Boneby Barbara Gowdy narrates from the perspective of elephants to subvert the anthropocentric discourse and construct a new species relation.Based on the trans-species psychology proposed by Gay Bradshaw and the concept“becoming”by Deleuze and Guttari, this paper argues that“becoming”pervades the story, and it is not only the content of the story, but also a strategy of anti-anthropocene narrative which is embodied in the description of multiple trauma experiences, such as elephants’personal trauma and collective trauma,to show Gowdy’s intricate observation of the behavior and deep understanding of the psychology of elephants. It is found that Gowdy explores the possibility of constructing trans-speciescons ciousnesses through“becoming” in literature. “Becoming-elephant” obscures the species border between human and elephants, challenges people’s traditional cognition of animals to show the author’s concerns about the fate of the individual elephant and anxieties about the survival of elephants as a species, reveal humans’responsibilities and obligation to help them recover from trauma,so as to realize the symbiosis of human and elephants, and get out of the predicament of anthropocene.

Key words:Anthropocene;animal trauma;becoming animal;The White Bone

The Humorous Sublimity of Antiheroism in Catch-22

MATao

Abstract:Joseph Heller’s novelCatch-22has been extolled as a canonic work in the history of contemporary American literature. The antiheroic narrative not only serves as an experimental device of postmodern literature, but also conveys the thought of ant iheroism inheriting the humanistic concept of freedom, and antiheroism displays aesthetic style of humorous sublimity.Traditional heroism has been deconstructed gradually in the process of historic changes and repalced by the rise of ant iheroism as a kind of firm spokesperson for the time.Actually, the antiheroic figures are not just a flash in the pan as an occational product, for their literary images can be charted by a pedigree in the western literary history.Heller represents solemn and tragic themes with satiric words and comic images so as to maintain rational reflections upon absurd reality.Through a choice of Sisyphean action of Yossarian and other figures,Heller interprets a new code of humanistic ethics and further presents the creative aesthetic features of humorous sublimity.
