Laowai@Chongqing holds intangible cultural heritage tours for expats in Chongqing

Learning calligraphy, folk songs, and picking tea leaves, about 20 foreign expats from Ethiopia, Russia, Belarus, France, South Korea and Britain participating in the 2020 Laowai@Chongqing Experience Intangible Cultural Heritage and Rural Villages Vsiting Program held in Mudong Town and Ersheng Town, Banan District of Chongqing, experienced how Banan's fruitful accomplishments were made under the ecologic and rural revitalization initiatives and truely felt the charm of traditional Chinese culture.

“This is the first Chinese character Ive learned to write. I'll add it to my collection.”

"Hold the brush in your right hand and follow me to write ..." At River Street, Mudong Town, foreign friends followed their teacher to learn calligraphy. Expats who are used to pens seemed a bit overwhelmed by big brushes. With patient instructions of the teacher, everyone tried to hold and maintain the brush, then started to create strokes. Although the words were written askew for this was the first time, it did not lower their interest in Chinese characters at all.

“This is the first Chinese character Ive learned to write. I'll add it to my collection.”A child from Ethiopia happily displayed his(her) calligraphy works, with pride on his(her) face.

"This is the first time I grind soybeans and make tofu pudding. Its very interesting!"

Guided by a local villager, Sergey from Russia is grinding soybeans to make tofu. The process of making tofu puddings out of soybeans made him extremely curious.

"This is the first time I grind soybeans and make tofu pudding. Its very interesting!” Sergey said that he will post photos and videos of this event online to share with friends at home and hope his friends could also have a chance to come to Chongqing and experience it.

“Im more in love with China, especially Banan of Chongqing.”

Foreign friends joined local villagers in the fields in Haiyan Village of Mudong Town and learned to loosen and fertilize the soil. Singing melodious folk songs while working, foreigners experienced the most authentic farming culture with great enthusiasm.

Mr. Anteneh Tariku, Deputy Consul General of the Consulate General of Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in Chongqing, lamented that:"This is great fun. Im more in love with China, especially Banan of Chongqing."

“Banan villages are beautiful and liveable.”

During an activity on May 30, a group of foreign friends went to Dingxin Tea Garden in Baixiang Mountain of Ersheng Town and Yunlintianxiang Scenic Area in Tianping Mountain. They learned about Chinese tea culture by picking tea leaves, processing tea leaves, brewing tea, and tasting freshly made green tea. They also experienced how the rural revitalization initiatives were implemented in villages in Banan by joining activities such as rowing boats, touring flower fields, picking blueberries in the scenic area.

"The rural ecology and environment here is very good and surprising. Villages are beautiful and livable." Liam Mihak from South Korea lamented that Banan villages were way beyond her imagination. Not only the scenery is stunning, the development here is rapid. The agricultural production and life of farmers are very modern. She also believed that it is a remarkable achievement of China to make concerted efforts in making rural areas more wealthy.
