How Teachers Improve Their Professional Quality in the Era of AI

Abstract: With the rapid development of science and technology, especially computer network technology, there are earth-shaking changes happening in human society as well as educational sector. As one of the oldest occupations in human society, teachers play an important role in the process of inheriting and spreading human cultural science knowledge.However, with the advent of the AI era, the traditional role of teachers has begun to change, and teachers' development and teaching advantages are facing enormous challenges. Therefore, this paper will focus on the development status of AI, the influence of AI on foreign language education and how teachers should cope with those challenges, to help teachers improve their professional quality.

I.The Development Status of AI

As a branch of computer science, AI has been bringing constant surprises to human beings.However, it also lead humans to fall into the meditation and be anxious whether we human beings will be replaced by AI one day.The true confrontation between AI and humans should be traced back to 1997.When IBM's "dark blue" computer defeated the world chess king Garry Kasparov; In 2017, the robot “Aidam” competed with many excellent students in college entrance examinations .In mathematics, Aidam completed all the exams in 9 minutes and 47 seconds. (Duan,2017).With the continuous upgrading and improvement of artificial intelligence, it will become more and more powerful. By 2018, China will set up the platform of AI basic resources and innovation.(Song,2019).General Secretary Xi Jinping stressed "Strengthen the leadership, clarify the task goal, and lay a solid foundation to promote the healthy development of China's new generation of artificial intelligence" (Duan,2017).The White House Science and Technology Policy Office also released the article "Preparing for the Future of Artificial Intelligence".(Yan,2017).Artificial intelligence technology has a wide range of applications,including computer science,law, medicine and etc.(Yang,2018).Therefore, when artificial intelligence brings shock and change to all walks of life, the education field will inevitably be affected by artificial intelligence. Teachers are worried about whether they will be unemployed, and then became the so-called "useless class" in the book written by the Israeli writer Yuval Hralili.(Wang&Li,2018)

II. AIs Impact on Education

1. The transformation of the role of teachers

In the era of artificial intelligence, the role of teachers has changed from a "teacher" in the traditional sense to a "leader of thought." Because of speech recognition, semantic recognition, big data storage, etc, artificial intelligence can help teachers to correct assignments and help teachers get out of mechanical teaching tasks. In particular, the development of human-computer interaction technology has enabled allow teachers to answer questions online and offline. In the teaching process, the basic knowledge can be completed by the robot. Thus,what teachers need to do is to pay attention to the individual needs of the students,and provide students with “personalized education programs”.

2. The transformation of teaching methods

The use of artificial intelligence has made classroom teaching more diverse and is no longer a single traditional teaching system. For example, the combination of AI and VR technology can help realize visual real-life situation teaching. Education which is in the form of human-machine dialogue will also become an important application of AI technology. Some AI robot with translation function can perform instant translation, which makes the robot is not restricted by language and country so that it can communicate with students in multi-language (Yang,2016).The combination of  AI and VR will enable students to see the corresponding real situation in the classroom, deepen students' impression of a certain knowledge point and improve teaching efficiency.

3.Changes in teaching assessment methods

Teachers are inevitably tired in correcting students homework or paper day-to-day, year-to-year . Then, these things can be done by machines in the future. The machine will build a scientific assessment model with the help of big data. It is convenient for teachers to know what knowledge and skills that students have mastered and to conduct diagnostic evaluation. Teachers can also make appropriate adjustments to instructional design and teaching evaluation based on these data, cultivate the spirit of students' active inquiry, and stimulate students' desire for active learning.For example,nowadays, there are many systems or APPs which have the function of correcting students homework in the market, and the rate of correct operation is high.

III. How Should Teachers Respond to Challenges in the Era of AI

In recent years, robots with teacher roles, such as "Xiao Pan" robots, it can guide students to learn,and correct students homework. Will such AI replace the role of teacher? some scholars believe the reason that teachers appear is for the survival and development of human beings.And ethical rules need to rely on teachers.(Niu,2018).Besides,AI lacks emotional care and the cultivation of complex creativity,which is what teachers can make up.(Zhang,2017).Morever, people can expose problems,though artificial intelligence can solve problems, it is not active. (Yu,2018). So how should teachers improve their professionalism?

1.Learn to use technology

When new technologies and big data come out, should we be behind closed doors, conservative, unwilling to understand and learn?or should we actively explore new technologies and take advantage of new technologies to enhance our professional knowledge?Obviously,the answer is the latter.But taking the initiative to accept new technology does not mean receiving it all, becoming a slave to artificial intelligence.We should also have our own consciousness and innovative thinking. Bringing big data into the classroom so that we can understand the students' learning situation.Teachers must break through the previous teaching methods, dare to apply artificial intelligence technology to their own education and management.(Liang,2019).

2.Have personality characteristics

With the continuous introduction and enrichment of online courses, students' knowledge-seeking channels become more diverse, and knowledge-oriented teaching may be replaced by technology (Zhao,2018).When online courses become more and more popular, teachers should have their own personality characteristics. This requires teachers to pay more attention to clarify the individual needs of students,

and then to open corresponding personalized courses. Instead of focusing solely on textbook knowledge, the curriculum design is combined with student life and individual development. Attract students attention with humorous language, vivid and interesting philosophical stories.

3. Focus on the combination of "teaching" and "cultivating people"

In traditional teaching, teachers pay more attention to “teaching ability”, which actually emphasizes the ability of teachers to successfully complete the teaching of standardized knowledge. In the era of artificial intelligence, intelligent robots are likely to go to the podium and accompany students to learn. Then, the teaching of standardized knowledge can be completely completed by intelligent robots. What teachers need to do more is to "cultivate people."Therefore, the purpose of education is to try to make learners grasp and pursue truth and goodness with their inner strength and talent.Then, teachers should pay more attention to the development of people themselves, combine the humanistic spirit of students with the scientific spirit, make students have ability of critical thinking.

IV. Conclusion

The advent of the era of artificial intelligence that has made the profession of teachers more and more concerned.Teachers should reposition their roles from traditional teaching, advance with the times, and improve their professionalism.The traditional teachers teaching ability, including traditional scientific research ability, classroom teaching ability, curriculum design ability, etc,which has not met the requirements of this era. This requires teachers to become a lifelong learner and re-establish the development and system of teachers' teaching ability.
