People are now banned from climbing Uluru in the desert of Australias Northern area. Uluru is one of the most sacred1 sites in indigenous2 Australian culture. It is the worlds largest stone. The site is now off-limits to climbers. The site used to be called Ayers Rock. It has been a major attraction. Tourists crowded there to climb the rock. However, it is a sacred site in Anangu culture.

The ban was first announced3 in 2017. Most visitors complied4 with it. A local Anangu man who grew up near Uluru said,“That place is a very sacred place. Thats like our church. Ive been telling them since I was a little boy,‘We dont want you to climb the rock. All of our stories are on the rock.” He said tourists who climbed the rock had no respect.

Discussion

1. Should Uluru be respected and not be climbed?

2. How can we understand more about the culture of places we visit?
