In the 20th century, Dutch psychologist Nico Frijda noticed something strange. Some patients went to hospitals every 28 days for headaches and mental fatigue (精神疲劳). He described this period  as the “law of emotions (情绪定律)”. It showed that people’s psychological changes were cyclical (周期性的). The following were four possible psychological status (心理状态) changes that we might experience during the COVID-19 outbreak, according to this theory.

1. Wait-and-see period

In the first 7 days or so of the viral outbreak, most people didn’t worry about COVID-19 and were happy to welcome Spring Festival. But in the next few days, more news about the epidemic made many people nervous. Fear began to spread. Out of panic, they began several rounds of mass buying: masks, ethanol (酒精) and disinfectant (消毒液).

2. Period of fear

With the rising number of confirmed cases (确诊病例) every day, people became more panicked and scared. Work and school were delayed, and people’s lives were changed. The fear had developed into anxiety (焦虑). It was a dark moment in the epidemic that continued to affect many people.

3. Period of depression (沮丧)

More confirmed cases and deaths might still be reported every day, but the upward trend was said to be going down. While still dealing with pressure (压力), people were hopeful that the epidemic would end in time. Many people were worrying about paying their rent and credit card bills. The key point for this period was waiting for a turning point.

4. Dawn period

As more effective measures were taken, the spread of the virus would finally be stopped. People would bring their lives back to normal, regain (重拾) their confidence and take lessons from fighting the virus.
