Most people know what it means to give support to a person with a disability. It means that you should show respect in the first place. Not just to show it but to let them feel it, too. They deserve it for the simple reason that they are trying much harder to achieve things that people without disabilities have. If you have respect and think about the disabled as equal to you, communicating with them will be much easier.

That is how it should be in theory. In practice, people feel uncomfortable because they worry about saying something wrong to the person with a disability. That is why they would rather avoid any contact and ignore that person. If people could just imagine a situation where they are on the other side, that they are disabled people, it would change everything. It would help, also, if people who are without disabilities could be aware of the fact that they dont know what tomorrow brings. Life is like that. Tomorrow, something bad can happen to any of us. Would we like that others make us feel different, to be ignored or avoided, like we are not good enough? No, I suppose that no one would like that.

Many disability organizations are working hard to improve the lives of people with disabilities. Accessibility to all sorts of buildings, education, employment and many other things is something that has already achieved results. Of course in some countries the situation is better than in others, but television is doing its share. It is good that you can see and hear everywhere on TV about problems that people with disabilities are having every day. That has influence on other people who can and want to help and that gives results. Little by little, we are getting to the point where people with disabilities can lead their lives as they want, not as they must.
