Dear Dr. Manners,

My close friend seldom says “please”. She will say “Can you get me that bag?” or “Move it over there!” I have told her a lot of times that it is polite to use “please” and “thank you”, but she hardly remembers. I feel that she is ordering me around without “please”, and I always get angry.

We have been close friends for over 10 years. It seems that I cant stand it any more. What should I do? Can you help me?

Sincerely,

Hawkins

Dear Ms Hawkins,

When your friend does not use polite words, it seems that she is ordering you to do something. So you have right to hate her behavior.

Ask her why she doesnt use “please” or “thank you”. Explain to her that it makes you feel uncomfortable. Also, you dont need to do anything for her because she doesnt seem kind or pleasant when she asks you to.

Maybe your friend was not taught how to use “please” or “thank you” in the normal conversation. So you can try to teach her that. Remember it is difficult to find another close friend if you lose one.

Best regards,

Dr. Manners

If you meet a British person in the street, it is very likely that he or she will apologize whether it is his or her fault (过错) or not.

It seems that Britain is becoming a nation where everyone is saying sorry. Almost each person says sorry about eight times each day—and one in eight people apologize as many as 20 times a day.

As you may have seen, the British people apologize more often than members of other cultures. A research shows that in many cases, peoples love of saying sorry in Britain goes a little further than it does for Americans. For example, about 15 British people would say “sorry” while only 10 from the US would do this if they sneezed (打喷嚏), if they corrected someones mistake or if someone knocked into them.

In the old days, “sorry” was used to express regret and sadness for having done something wrong. But now British people use the expression as a way of showing good manners. For example, they might say “sorry” instead of “excuse me”, “pardon”, “what” or “whatever”.

People in Britain also use sorry when they share the same feeling with others—so they might say “sorry about the rain”.

However, British peoples use of “sorry” may make things very confusing (迷惑不清) and difficult for foreigners who are not familiar with their ways. But actually, people in Britain pay much attention to the feelings of others. This is the very reason why they apologize every day.

(    )26. What does the passage mainly talk about?

A. What daily expressions British people often use.

B. How people in Britain keep in touch with foreigners.

C. Why British people say sorry many times every day.

(    )27. In the old days, people said sorry when they _______.

A. did something wrong

B. asked the way

C. wanted to repeat something

(    )28. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Americans say sorry more than British people.

B. Even British people get confused when they say sorry.

C. The British also say sorry to share the same feeling with others.

(    )29. Does British peoples use of “sorry” make foreigners confused?

A. No, it doesnt.

B. Yes, it does sometimes.

C. No, not at all.

(    )30. From the passage we can learn that British people _______.

A. like to talk about the weather

B. care a lot about others

C. love to correct mistakes

C)阅读短文,根据短文内容简要回答下列问题。(共5小题,每小题2分)

Linda Evans was my best friend—like the sister I never had. We did everything together: piano lessons, movies, swimming, and horseback riding.

When I was 13 years old, my family moved away. Linda and I kept in touch through letters, and we saw each other on special time—like my wedding (婚禮) and Lindas. Soon we were busy with children and moving to new homes, and we wrote less often. One day a card that I sent came back, stamped “Address Unknown”. I had no idea how to find Linda.

Over the years, I missed Linda very much. I wanted to share happiness of my children and then grandchildren. And I needed to share my sadness when my brother and mother died. There was an empty place in my heart that only a friend like Linda could fill.

One day I was reading a newspaper when I noticed a photo of a young woman who looked very much like Linda and whose last name was Wagman—Lindas married name. “There must be thousands of Wagmans,” I thought, but I still wrote to her.

She called as soon as she got my letter. “Mrs. Tobin!” she said excitedly. “Linda Evans Wagman is my mother.”

Minutes later I heard a voice that I knew very much, even after 40 years, laughed and cried and caught up on each others lives. Now the empty place in my heart is filled. And theres one thing that Linda and I know for sure: We wont lose each other again!

31. When did the writer go to piano lessons with Linda Evans?

32. Why didnt they often write to each other?

33. Why was there was an empty place in the writers heart?

34. When was the writer happy?

35. How long havent they kept in touch?

37. I was proud of working in the restaurant because I was also working for the good of the family. But my father clearly said that I had to meet certain standard(标准) to be part of the team. He said, “OK. 39. 你付我你在這儿一日三餐的钱怎么样? And for the times you bring in your friends for free soft drinks?” He worked out the amount of money I owed(欠) him, about $40 a week.

I remember returning to Seattle after being away in the US Army for about two years. I had just been promoted(升职) to Captain at that time. And full of pride, I walked into my parents restaurant, but the first thing Dad said was “How about your cleaning up tonight?” I couldnt believe my ears!I am an officer in the Army! But it didnt matter. As far as Dad was concerned, I was just another member of the team. I reached for the swob(拖把). Working for Dad has taught me that the contribution (奉献) to a team is above all. 40. It has nothing to do with whether that team is for a family restaurant or the US Army.
