Translation of Political Discourse as a Practice of Discourse Reframing: Investigating Discourse Features of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China and Its English Translation

XU Fang-fu

Abstract:In this new era when China is to have a bigger say in the world, challenges need to be addressed in both the framing and communication of its discourse.Translation, the necessary medium for the translingual communication of such discourses, can be regarded as a reframing activity within Fairclough’s framework of approaching discourse as a social practice. The three volumes ofXi Jinping: The Governance of China, canon of current political discourse and characterized with concise expression, rich intertextuality and rigid logic, serve as a good prototype for the reframing practice of translation. An investigation into these discourse features of the original text and the communicability of its translation indicates that, while effective for international communication in general, the translation leaves space in conceptual accuracy, intertextual explicitness and cohesive power. It is also suggested that introducing methods and results of discourse studies into the reframing practice of translation may be an effective way to integrate translation studies with practices for a better communicability of translation.

Cultural Politics of Structuralism: Althusser and the Construction of Criticism Paradigm of Cultural Ideology

LI Yan-feng

Abstract:Althusser is a famous French Marxist theorist in the late 20th century. He uses structuralism theory to reinterpret and interpret Marx’s theory, and puts forward a series of new theoretical propositions, such as the general problem, epistemological rupture, contradiction and multiple decision, ideology and ideological state machine, etc.Althusser’s theory of ideology goes against the traditional Marxist theory of limiting ideology to the theoretical path of observation and research, and instead reconstructs the theoretical connotation of ideology from multiple dimensions, such as structure, representation system, materiality and symptoms. In particular, his theoretical thinking on culture and art from the perspective of ideology forms the structuralist cultural political theory paradigm of Western Marxist cultural research and promotes the construction of literary and artistic ideological criticism discourse form.
