Imagine walking through an ancient city, then climbing a gate tower to take in a wonderful view of the city and its more than 600-year-old walls. You can hear the city's heartbeat in the air. This is the Ancient City of Pingyao in Shanxi Province,a place that should definitely be on your travel route if you enjoy history or ancient architecture since its origins can be traced back to more than 2,700 years ago.
Located in the center of Shanxi Province,Pingyao is the hometown of Jin merchants,a group of merchants who actively dominated(支配)a booming commodity market throughout China for more than 500 years, especially during the Ming and Qing dynasties. After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949,the city's agriculture and manufacturing industries developed rapidly.Following China's reform and opening-up in the 1980s,Pingyao struggled with the transition from a managed economy to the current market-oriented economy.During this time, the city government sought out new ways to break through this economic bottleneck.
Finally,in the winter of 1997,an opportunity came knocking.Through the efforts of the city government,Pingyao earned its place on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which caused the entire world to take notice of the city.
Since the city's fame has risen, locals in Pingyao have deepened their understanding of the conservation efforts preserving the historical relics in their hometown.Meanwhile, the city administration has continued to upgrade itself through a strategy that follows the pillars of“conservation, entrepreneurship, development and protection”.

The garden city was largely the invention of Ebenezer Howard (1850—1928).After immigrating from England to the USA,and an unsuccessful attempt to make a living as a farmer,he moved to Chicago, where he saw the reconstruction of the city after the disastrous fire of 1871.In those days,it was nicknamed “the Garden City”,almost certainly the source of Howard's name for his later building plan of towns.Returning to London,Howard developed his design in the 1880s and 1890s,drawing on ideas that were popular at the time, and creating a unique combination of designs.
The nineteenth-century poor city was in many ways a terrible place, dirty and crowded;but it offered economic and social opportunities. At the same time, the British countryside was in fact equally unattractive:though it promised fresh air and nature,it suffered from agricultural depression(萧条期)and it offered neither enough work and wages, nor much social life.Howard's idea was to combine the best of the town and country in a new kind of settlement, the garden city.Howard's idea was that a group of people should set up a company, borrowing money to establish a garden city in the depressed countryside, which is far enough from existing cities to make sure that the land was bought at the bottom price.
Garden cities would provide a central public open space, radial avenues and connected industries. They would be surrounded by a much larger area of green belt, also owned by the company, containing not merely farms but also some industrial institutions. As more and more people moved in,the garden city would reach its planned limit—Howard suggested 32,000 people;then, another would be started a short distance away. Thus, over time, there would develop a vast planned house collection, extending almost without limit;within it,each garden city would offer a wide range of jobs and services, and each would be connected to the others by a rapid transportation system, thus giving all the economic and social opportunities of a big city.

B.Each one would continue to become larger.
C.People would live and work in the same place.

With over 4.1 billion people,or around 55 percent of the world's population, living in urban areas, cities and towns worldwide are getting increasingly jammed. In addition to spending hours stuck in traffic, residents are also exposed to high air pollution levels caused by transportation emissions(排放物).Now,Saudi Arabia hopes to overturn urban living with “The Line”—a futuristic city designed around nature, without cars, roads and crowded places!
The totally different city, announced on January 10,2021,is the brainchild of Saudi Crown Prince(王储)Mohammed bin Salman(MBS).Located in Neom,a 10,000-square-mile high-tech planned development on the Red Sea coast,The Line will be the base of MBS's Saudi Vision 2030.The strategic plan aims to diversify Saudi Arabia's oil-dependent economy into other fields, like tourism, and create exciting job opportunities for its citizens.
The 105-mile-long city, expected to cost between$100 billion and$200 billion, will be built along a straight line and comprise several self-sustaining communities. To ensure all services are within a short,five-minute walk, each community will feature a three-layer infrastructure(基础设施).There will be no cars or roads on the top “pedestrian layer” so residents can freely walk and bike in the surrounding green spaces. The second “service layer” will include all essential daily services, such as schools, medical clinics, leisure facilities, and grocery stores. The third “spine layer” will house ultrahigh-speed transportation and autonomous vehicles transporting residents across communities in less than 20 minutes. The entire city will be powered by renewable clean energy sources such as solar power and wind, and possibly even hydrogen. If all goes according to the plan, construction of this groundbreaking and complex infrastructure project will start before the end of 2021.In addition to providing up to a million residents with a clean and stress-free living environment,The Line is expected to create 380,000 new jobs, promote economic diversification, and contribute a shocking$48 billion to Saudi Arabia's Gross Domestic Product(GDP)by 2030.More importantly,MBS believes it will provide governments worldwide a blueprint for how people and the planet can co-exist in harmony.

In its early history,Chicago had floods frequently, especially in the spring, making the streets so muddy that people, horses, and carts got stuck. An old joke that was popular at the time went like this:A man is stuck up to his waist in a muddy Chicago street.Asked if he needs help,he replies,“No,thanks.I've got a good horse under me.”
The city planner decided to build an underground drainage(排水)system, but there simply wasn't enough difference between the height of the ground level and the water level. The only two options were to lower the Chicago River or raise the city.
An engineer named Ellis Chesbrough convinced me that the city had no choice but to build the pipes above the ground and then cover them with dirt. This raised the level of the city's streets by as much as 12 feet.
This,of course, created a new problem:dirt practically buried the first floors of every building in Chicago.Building owners were faced with a choice:either change the first floors of their buildings into basements, and change the second stories into main floors,or hoist the entire buildings to meet the new street level.Small wood-frame buildings could be lifted fairly easily. But what about large, heavy structures like the Tremont Hotel, which was a six-story brick building?
That's where George Pullman came in.He had developed some house-moving skills successfully. To lift a big structure like the Tremont Hotel,Pullman would place thousands of jackscrews(螺旋起重机)beneath the building's foundation. One man was assigned to operate each section of roughly 10 jackscrews. At Pullman's signal, each man turned his jackscrews the same amount at the same time, thereby raising the building slowly and evenly.Astonishingly, the Tremont Hotel stayed open during the entire operation, and many of its guests didn't even notice anything was happening. Some people like to say that every problem has a solution. But in Chicago's early history, every engineering solution seemed to create a new problem. Now that Chicago's waste water is draining efficiently into the Chicago River, the city's next step is to clean the polluted river.
13.The author mentions the joke to show ________.
A.horses were fairly useful in Chicago
B.Chicago's streets were extremely muddy
C.Chicago was very dangerous in the spring
D.Chicago people were particularly humorous
14.The underlined word “hoist” in paragraph 4 probably means “________”.
A.change B.lift C.repair D.decorate
15.The passage is mainly about the early Chicago's ________.
A.popular lifestyles and their influences
B.environmental disasters and their causes

D.successful businessmen and their achievements

The eight-year-old Carol lived with her father David, mother May and elder brother Rob.The little family happily lived in a beautiful village surrounded with beautiful nature. The village was at the foot of a mountain, with beautiful views of the snowy mountain. The family survived on growing seasonal plants and trees.Their life was totally surrounded by nature and beauty.
While they lived a very happy life,Carol did not love the beautiful atmosphere of the village. She really wanted to move into the city and enjoy the city life. She wanted to shop, move around the city, watch movies, and eat in fantastic restaurants and cafes.
However, there was hardly any chance that Carol's family moved to the city as they had everything in the village.
One day,Carol fell asleep during the early noon and she had a sound sleep.Of course, she had a strange dream. She saw her grandmother in her dream as a fairy and her deceased grandmother granted her a wish.Carol requested that she would like to enjoy the city life as she always desired.
Grandmother understood the desire of Carol, but still wanted to convince her that the peaceful village life was better than the city life. She told Carol,“Baby, you cannot have access to fresh fruits and vegetables from plants as you have at your home. You cannot breathe fresh air.You cannot play with animals. You can hardly find any trees. You will not find peace as you see here!Do you still want to go to the city?”
Without hearing the concerns,Carol asked her grandmother to grant the wish.Grandmother granted her wish but with a condition.Carol was told that she would only have 6 hours to spend in the city.Later, she would return to the village.Carol agreed.
