Memory plays a vital role in our lives, both in the short and long term. If youre wondering how to improve memory, here are some effective ways to do so.

Quiz Yourself

1     . When you make flashcards, create a practice test, or cover the answers and quiz yourself, you are forcing yourself to face what you do and dont know and which memories are weaker than others. This forces you to practice your recall and strengthen your long term memory.

     2

If youre not already taking exercise regularly, then heres another reason to do so: Exercising for 20-30 minutes three times a week will improve your long-term memory. Regular physical activities increase blood flow in your body and supplies the brain with extra oxygen and nutrients(營养). A well-fed brain is a well-functioning brain!

Get Plenty of Sleep

If you dont get adequate sleep, then its likely that youre not able to remember well either.     3     . Sleeping helps our brains clear out some less important memories, which helps strengthen others. According to sleep experts, you need a minimum of seven to nine hours of sleep per night.     4     , then within just a few days, youll see an obvious improvement to your ability to remember and recall things.

Take More Breaks

Typically, when studying lots of new information, most people will spend hours reading it in an attempt to learn and remember the content as quickly as possible.     5     . The truth is that the brain is built to detect and respond to change and prolonged(持久的)attention to a single task actually hinders(阻碍)performance. When you take a break from memorizing information, it refocuses your attention and energy, leading to increased focus overall.

A. Start working out

B. Challenge your brain

C. If you get this amount of shut-eye regularly

D. Unfortunately, theyve overlooked something

E. When you free yourself from the habit of oversleeping

F. This is because sleep and memory are closely connected

G. Periodically testing yourself to see what you remember is important

Conflict often happens between parents and young children. It is important to work on obtaining healthy communication with your parents.

Make time to have meaningful conversation

The newer generation often contact(联系)others through technology, such as text messages, online chats or emails.     1     . Although the older generation are catching on, most still prefer a personal conversation or phone call. Take the time to sit down and have a few minutes of communicating with them every day.

     2

If a topic is important to you, bring it to your parents. Bottling up emotions(情緒)or annoyance can destroy the relationship which you have with them.     3     . Avoid getting trapped in the blame game. Allow time for them to answer and share how they feel.

Use the pause, empathy, or need method with your parents

4     . If a certain talk with your parents is taking a turn for the worse, start by taking pause. Listen to your parentsneeds or wants and empathize(感同身受)with them. Inform them that you also have your own needs and wants. The next step is to express your perspectives and ask them to empathize with you too.

Dont just talk about the difficult objects

Talk to your parents about your everyday life and funny experiences. Encourage them to share how their day went.     5     . You dont want to talk to them only when you are faced with an issue. Regular communication about the less important things will make the difficult conversation much easier.

A. Avoid blaming each other

B. Be open and honest with your parents

C. There is much less face-to-face contact

D. It is an effective approach to preventing conflict

E. Always communicate your feelings in a calm and neutral tone(轻声)

F. Consider that your parentsgeneration has a strong need for studying new things.

G. Most of your conversation with your parents should be light-hearted and humorous

Powerful Body Language Tips

The effective use of body language plays a key role in communication. Here are some tips for powerful body language:

     1

Research at Harvard and Columbia Business Schools shows that simply holding your body in wide, “high-power”poses(姿勢)(leaning back with hands behind the head, or standing with legs and arms stretched wide open)for just two minutes stimulates higher levels of hormone(激素)linked to power and dominance.     2

To increase participation, look like youre listening.

If you want people to speak up, dont multitask while they do. Avoid checking your text messages or watching, or checking out how other participants are reacting.     3     You can also do that by making eye contacts.

To connect instantly with someone, shake hands.

4     Touching someone on the arm, hand, or shoulder for just 1/40 of a second creates a human bond. In the workplace, physical touch and warmth are established through handshaking, and this contact makes a lasting and positive impression.

To stimulate good feelings, smile.

A genuine smile not only stimulates(激發)your own sense of well-being, it also tells that you are approachable, cooperative, and trustworthy. A genuine smile crinkles the eyes, lights up the face, and fades away slowly.     5     When you smile at someone, they almost always smile in return. And, because facial expressions bring about corresponding feelings, the smile you get back actually changes that persons emotional state in a positive way.

If you follow these simple yet powerful body language tips, you may increase your nonverbal impact in the workplace.

A. To develop your confidence, assume a power pose.

B. To improve your memory, uncross your arms and legs.

C. This is the most primitive and powerful unspoken signal.

D. Doing so will make the other person feel understood and accepted.

E. Try this when youre feeling tentative but want to appear confident.

F. Most importantly, it directly influences how other people respond to you.

G. Instead, focus on those who are speaking by turning your head to face them directly.

Dating and Job Hunting

There are a lot of similarities between looking for a job and looking for a significant other. Sure, there are differences-probably best not to end an interview with a kiss-but the similarities are worth noting.     1

First impressions are everything.

We only have one chance to make a first impression, and theres no taking it back. When people first meet you, they only know the you sitting in front of them. Put simply: going for a clean and put-together look can send a great first impression on the other person.     2

Identify whether their goals agree with yours.

Why would an employer hire you if you indicate your real passion(热情)is acting but you are applying for a research role? Of course honesty is the key.     3     This is one of the top reasons that companies pass candidates, and you certainly are not setting yourself up for success in dating with these types of closed-minded responses.

     4

Nobody needs to know your medical histories, why you had such a bitter break-up, or the names of all your first cousins the first time they meet you. Keep it brief and light, and professional in the interview setting.

Everyone loves to be loved.

There are people who love to play hard-to-get.     5     On the other hand, how would you feel if someone said“I love you”, and you replied,“Let me think about it and I will get back to you.”This is silly- dont make them wait.

A. Too much personal information is a turn-off.

B. Sharing your information allows your personality to shine.

C. But it is best to keep answers about the future open-ended.

D. Youd better answer those open-ended questions more thoroughly.

E. If you want advice on how to score a second date or interview, here are four top tips.

F. This allows for them to concentrate on what you are saying and not on what you are wearing.

G. Regarding interviewing, it is a common misbelief that you should take a day to accept a position.

I have seen too many people waste their potential and live unhappily because they cant overcome some destructive(毁灭性的)limiting beliefs.     1

“I need to know everything before I start.”

We often overthink things. We keep going back and forth. But no one starts with all the answers. Even Buffet started without knowing everything about investing(投资).     2     We learn along the way. But if we never start, we cant do that.

“What if it doesnt work out?”

A lot of us are already thinking way too far ahead. “What if it doesnt work out and I end up wasting a few years. I am better off staying where I am.”     3     Yes, things might not work out. But we all have to adapt for there is no“safe”job or business.

“I dont know what I want”

This is a limiting belief that most people never become aware of.     4     And yet, they do nothing because“I dont know what I want!”Actually, if we dont know what we want, we can start by improving the areas that keep us from living well.

“Its too late now!”

Do you know whats really too late?     5     There is no point in waiting for the“perfect timing.”Life is not a race but a marathon, so only when we keep going consistently, can we really make it.

A. Its the same for everyone.

B. It reflects peoples real thoughts.

C. Its when we dont start going after the things we want.

D. Get over these, and they will never live aimlessly again.

E. They choose to live a seemingly steady life, without any personal growth.

F. They know that their career, health, or relationship is making them unhappy.

G. Thats the kind of thinking that makes people unhappy and regret their decisions later.

Eat breakfast. A recent study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that healthy people who skipped breakfast were almost three times more likely to have heart disease six years later than those who ate a big breakfast. One possible reason:“If youre eating a proper breakfast, youre less likely to be hungry later and make poor food choices,”says Abramson.“We need to eat a balanced diet as part of a healthy lifestyle.     5

其中,take a day to accept a position与后文的make them wait为近义复现。

该项中get over与空前句中的overcome为同义复现,these指代空前句中的destructive limiting beliefs,they指代空前句中的people。

空后句讲“如果你被一所学校录取了,但是你负担不起学费,你可以要求间隔年(take a gap year)去工作来积累你的费用”,浏览剩余各选项,发现E项中也有take a gap year,为原词复现,且该项中的 building credit and savings也与空前句中的build your finances为同义复现,故选E项。

且G项中的the state of feeling very sad与空前句中的depression为同义复现。
