For the past three decades, Richard Sears, has been focusing on one thing: Chinese culture.

His interest in Chinese language goes back to 1972, when he was a university student. “I had checked across Canada and the US. And I was on my way to Africa,” he says. “I wanted to see the world. But then I realized only 7 percent of the world spoke English as a mother tongue. So I wanted to know what it was like to speak another language.” Richard bought a one-way ticket to China to learn Chinese. At that time, Richard supported himself by teaching English.

Two years later, he returned to the US to finish his study. He became a researcher after graduation and later worked as a software engineer in Silicon Valley. In 1981, he lost his job. He even had to work on a night job as a guard for several years so that he could study Chinese at night and get some rest during the day. “I didn't earn much, but at least I had time to read Chinese books,” he says. At 40, he was already pretty fluent in Chinese.

In 1994, Richard suffered a heart attack. “I did not know if I would live another hour,” he says. “When I finally recovered, I had to think about my life, and I had to plan as if I was going to die maybe in a year. So I decided to better know about Chinese with more efforts.”

Last September, Richard set up his studio in Nanjing as part of the local authority's plan to promote cultural services. The studio focuses on telling stories of Chinese culture and character origins. They have made more than 60 such videos in both English and Chinese.

“We also want to make videos with a high educational value both for Chinese and foreign learners of Chinese characters. There will be a large number of videos, showing the origins of modern and traditional Chinese characters,” Richard says.

4. When did Richard Sears start to learn Chinese?

A. In 1971. B. In 1972.

C. In 1981. D. In 1994.

5. How did Richard Sears earn a living while learning Chinese in China?

C. By receiving his friends' support. D. By setting up his studio.

6. What can we say about Richard Sears' studio?

A. It has posted less than 60 videos in English.

B. It aims to promote Chinese culture.

C. It's mainly loved by Chinese speakers.

D. It was founded by the local government.

7. Which of the following best describes Richard Sears?

A. Humorous. B. Generous.

C. Helpful. D. Determined.

Power walking, also referred to as speed walking, is an aerobic activity that can be done just about anywhere or anytime. A person who participates in the activity travels at a pace that is faster than walking but slower than jogging.

A proper technique during power walking includes taking small but quick pace and landing on the heels (足跟), with toes aimed at a 45-degree angle (角度) from the ground. Speed is produced by flexibility, not long paces. With each step, the walker rolls his or her feet forward and thrusts (猛推) from the toes to start a new step. This thrust gives a walker more force and power. With each step, the walker keeps his or her arms bent at a 90-degree angle while keeping a closed fist and making a curved move from the waist to the chest. The walker repeats the move while allowing his or her arms to swing, which helps to keep a light pace and uses more calories.

The activity provides many benefits (好处) for walkers. Power walking helps build up muscles and burn calories. It can also help to control an individual's weight and can enhance the immune system. The activity improves physical fitness, which may help lower the risk of injury. It also lowers stress levels, and can help provide a comfortable night's sleep. Walking can also improve the cardiovascular (心血管的) system.

Before beginning the activity, one should check with his or her doctor. A walker should also make sure he or she has comfortable fitting shoes before starting walking.Shoes that are light and flexible can prevent some unnecessary injuries. A beginner will often walk up to 30 minutes, while a person more advanced in the technique can walk up to an hour.

8. What is the purpose of Para. 1?

A. To offer some questions. B. To provide some examples.

C. To explain what power walking is. D. To make a comparison with jogging.

9. Which of the following is a must in power walking?

A. Landing on the toes first. B. Keeping the whole body relaxed.

C. Walking with small but fast steps. D. Bending arms at a 45-degree angle.

10. What does the underlined word “enhance” in Para. 3 mean?

A. Destroy. B. Improve.

C. Influence. D. Picture.

11. Where is the text probably taken from?

A. A health magazine. B. A travel brochure.

C. A biology textbook. D. An advertisement.

In France, a lot of energy goes into one's personal appearance. Clothing is a big part of Parisian culture; after all, this is one of the world's fashion capitals.

Parisians like simple, classic pieces that are timeless. Must-have pieces such as a good pair of jeans, a trench coat, and basic knitwear are always good to have on hand.Parisians don't really like clothing to be colorful or ostentatious, especially not something to be worn for an ordinary day out. Black, white and different shades of beige (米色) are common sightings around Paris' streets.

Classic goes for shoes, too. A pair of quality leather boots, loafers (平底便鞋) or heels can be paired with anything, provided they are in a shade of black or brown. Comfort is key, since most Parisians do a lot of walking. However, you'll rarely notice Parisians wearing open-toed shoes. Younger generation Parisians are becoming part of sports shoes culture, though it is unlikely to see an elder Parisian wearing any form of them in public.

The beret(贝雷帽) is also an important item for most Parisians. It would be far too general to say that all Parisians are fond of berets, but the vast majority can appreciate their place in fashion history. They also love having a way of covering their hair when unexpected wind or rain happens in the City of Light!

Parisians don't like logos (标志). Contrary to Italians, Parisians prefer not to see any kind of printed logo on clothing, handbags or shoes, unless it is extremely small. Something to keep in mind is that just because Parisians are not into logos, this does not mean they are not into brands (品牌). On the contrary, the French love luxury fashion and branded clothing. Parisians know their brands, and they don't need logos to tell them when something is of a particular fashion house, or when something is real or fake.12. What does the underlined word “ostentatious” mean in the second paragraph?

A. Simple. B. Old. C. Creative. D. Showy.

13. What will an elder Parisian probably wear in public?

A. White boots. B. Black loafers.

C. Open-toed shoes. D. Comfortable sports shoes.

14. How do Parisians like the beret?

A. Most of them like to have one. B. They think it too old-fashioned.

C. They think it goes well with long hair. D. Most of them wear it for a special day.

15. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. Parisians don't like brands.

B. Parisians aren't into oversized logos.

C. Parisians don't care about what is in fashion.

D. Parisians prefer not to see any logo on clothing.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Music has always been an essential part of my family. As a little girl, I often watched my mom singing with others. As I grew older, she and I would sing while we did the dishes or hung clothes. My brother Dean was also a musical soul. In good time or in bad, there was always music in our house. It shaped us, comforted us, and gave us a way to express feelings that might otherwise have gone unspoken.

After Dean became a father, we learned that his oldest son was on the autism spectrum. My nephew Carl did not handle social situations well, and sometimes even to speak aloud outside the family for him was a struggle. He worked very hard to overcome his fears, so much so that the year he was eight, he decided he wanted to be part of a music program with the other children in his Sunday school class. The part he had been offered was one that required him to sing a verse all on his own—a solo.

My brother carefully explained to him that this would mean singing in front of the audience. There would be no one singing with him. Carl considered this very carefully. After a couple of days, he decided that he would accept the part. He explained to us that he believed he could do it because it was a very special occasion. He said he knew his daddy would help him to be the best singer.

For over a month, he and his father practiced together. Every evening would find them locked away in the music room. My brother played the guitar, and my nephew's small voice came from somewhere deep down inside his little body. He gained confidence, and when the day of the concert arrived, he was certain all would go well. My brother waited backstage, giving Carl double thumbs-up, and he came out to sit with the rest of the family to watch and take photos.

Paragraph 1:

When it was finally time for Carl to sing, the music played on, and he froze.
