RIVERSCAPE at Victoria Park Residence, Singapore

Riverscape is a study in the duality of opposing forces and contrasts in scale, surface textures, colour and details which stirs a viewer’s a perception of both calm and disruption. A series of 3 sculptural artworks adheres to the principles of the site’s geomancy, is set in a private garden responds to the client brief for an area of calm, personal retreat using the sound of water to instill a feeling of utmost privacy and solitude.

Created from three massive rectangular granite blocks fnished with contrasting split face and polished surfaces the artworks presents the Dr Okashimo’s interpretation of a natural riverine landscape provoked by the inference of human interaction shows a network of valleys where water fows through and across the rugged surfaces. Perfectly straight, parallel, saw-cut incisions repeat across the split face top surface onto which numerous arbitrarily-placed, upstanding polished granite blades intercept yet support the rhythm. Part of his ‘Cutting Series’ it explores the artist’s ongoing fascination of the process of erosion and impermanence through aggressive interventions while preserving the integrity of the stone.

Quote - Dr Colin K. Okashimo

"Disruption and equilibrium, towards a state of relative calm…this follows from the premise that in order to express a condition of calm, one needs to contrast it with one of disruption."

The chaos versus calm of the stone sculpture can be seen at a glance with the saw cutting taking place in a rhythmic and evenly spaced, inserting overtly man-made objects in a random fashion to add to the duality. An on-looker can sense the opposing forces in a glance.
