Americans are worried about new technology. They are concerned that machines. Including robots, will take over work now done by humans. These findings come from a new report by the Pew Research Center of Washington DC.

About 75 percent of Americans questioned by Pew said automation will increase income inequality between the rich and the middle class and the poor. And 64 percent of people expect automation to be so common in America that people will face difficulty finding things to do with their lives.

Some of the concerns about technology come from a distrust about whether machines will always make the right decision. Many Americans believe humans have better judgment in dealing with complex matters. One example is selecting a person for a job.

Most Americans want the government to limit automation. For example, 87 percent support a requirement that all driverless vehicles have a human in the drivers seat who can take control when needed. And 85 percent want to limit machines to mostly doing jobs that are dangerous or unhealthy for humans.

Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder of Facebook, spoke last May to graduating seniors from Harvard University in Massachusetts. His talk centered on the uncertain future facing young people. “Our generation will have to deal with tens of millions of jobs replaced by automation like self-driving cars and trucks,” Zuckerberg told the graduates.

Zuckerberg said young people will have to find projects that will bring both jobs and direct benefits to the people of the world. He said in his speech that 300,000 people worked to put a man on the moon, and millions of people built, the Hoover Dam as well as other great projects over the last 100 years.

A. Useful.         B. Effective.                 C. Dangerous.         D. Undependable.

9. Which of the following do the majority of Americans want the government to do?

C. Select a person for a job by computer.

D. Get rid of all driverless vehicles.

10. What did Zuckerberg encourage the students to do?

A. Refuse self-driving vehicles.                B. Create new job chances.

C. Consider large projects.                     D. Fight against robots.

11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A. New Technology Creates More Jobs

B. New Technology Makes New Unfairness

C. Americans Worry Robots Will Take Jobs

D. Robots Make Work Easy to Do for Workers

Apple and Microsoft each launched new products. One company astonished everyone. The other made people sleepy. Can you guess which was which? You probably guessed wrong. Because Apple, famous for its creative products, was the tech giant whose new product caused a collective shrug. While Microsoft, which stole a move out of the Apple Playbook, won cheers from high-end, creative-class consumers like business analysts, media designers and music producers.

If youve ever watched science fiction movies like Minority Report—where Tom Cruise seems to operate pictures and data hanging on mid-air by touching them, spreading his fingers to increase on details, and sending files and information sliding from one folder to another with a click of the finger, you can see how Microsoft is trying to show the same experience.

Meanwhile, apples new products were almost like some fine promotions for its Apple TV. They boast that the new Macbook Pro has a smaller size and more functions, and a new touch screen bar on laptop keyboards where function keys used to be.

So whats going on? In many ways, Apple is focusing on attracting the average consumers who have been attracted by Microsoft. And Microsoft is focusing on targeting the high-end professionals Apple has historically been associated with. You can even see this is the companies ad campaigns: Microsofts ads stress imagination and creativity, while Apples commercial chief performance and convenience of its Macbooks.

So Apple is trying to control the world of devices and laptops from the top down, starting with the high-end market and moving on to appeal to a broader base of consumers. Microsoft, having already strengthened itself within the bigger low-end market, is now attempting the opposite with a bottom-up strategy. Will they succeed? Time will tell...

B. Microsofts new products made a big hit.

C. Apple and Microsoft developed the same products.

D. The design of Microsofts products is original and unique.

13. Why does the author mention the science fiction movie in Paragraph 2?

A. To show Microsofts new products are inspired by the movie.

B. To tell us Microsofts new products can be used in movies.

C. To encourage more people to see the science fiction movie.

D. To show how trendy Microsofts new products are.

14. What does the underlined word “boast” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

A. complain                 B. inform          C. announce           D. brag

15. In which section of a newspaper can we most probably read this passage?
