The Red Fan

Sunday Moring at 7 o’clock at Bund River Front may reveal 21stcentury Shanghai architecture in the background. In the foreground, traditional dancing and handcrafting, symbolized by the red fan, serves as an eye-catcher in this photograph.

Nanjing Dong Lu in Twilight

The Nanjing East Road (Nanjing Dong Lu) marks the vibrant center of downtown Shanghai. Here many international and local people come for shopping or just for promenading. Nanjing Road shows that Shanghai is an international city and a melting pot of nations.

Saturday-Night Fever

On Saturday Nights, the Bund lights are bright and colorful. The place is more than crowded, mainly by young people. They are tourists or young professionals from inside and outside of China. Pudong New Area generally serves as the background, whereas the old buildings along the Bund provide the warm light in the faces.

Jewish Refugee Museum

Shanghai Jewish Refugee Museum details the story of 20,000 Jewish Refugees who fled Nazi-occupied areas in Europe and settled in Shanghai during the Second World War.The photograph of a memorial in the museum shows the arrival of a family owning nothing more than what they can carry in their arms.

Tai Chi and Dancing

On early Sunday mornings, you can see Tai Chi everywhere in Shanghai, especially along the Bund riverfront. The Tai Chi martial artists train their bodies and simultaneously keep alive an old Chinese tradition which in modern Shanghai blends in with this modern city’s international spirit.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hans Jochen Wiedemann

I was a Professor of Automotive Engineering at the University of Stuttgart from 1998 to 2019, when I retired. Before, I was working in automotive development at Audi. Since 2019 I have been a senior consultant at the Research Institute for Automotive Engineering and Powertrain Systems, Stuttgart (FKFS).

In 2002, I came to Shanghai for the first time. My old Audi colleague, Professor Wan Gang, had invited me to give lectures in automotive engineering at CDHK (Sino-German College of Tongji University). In 2004 I was appointed “Professor at CDHK.” With Tongji-University Colleagues, I worked on designing the Shanghai Automotive Wind Tunnel Center. In 2009 I was awarded the Magnolia Silver Award by the City of Shanghai.

Photography has always been part of my life. During my many visits to Shanghai, I used my camera to better “see” the great city of Shanghai and its people.
