一 功能口语

1谈论动物

动物是人类永远的朋友。你最喜欢哪种动物？是熊猫、老虎、狮子，还是其他动物呢？下面让我们一起来谈谈动物吧！

如今越来越多人喜欢在家里养宠物 (pet)，“pet”作为名词时，是“宠物，爱畜，宝贝”的意思。“把……当成宠物来养”是“keep…as a pet (pets)”；当作为形容词时，“pet”是“宠爱的，特别珍爱的”的意思。“我是妈妈的宝贝女儿”便可以说成“I’m my mother’s pet daughter.”。

2询问原因

在日常生活中，如果我们有一些事情弄不明白，就总会想要问明原因，那么我们应该怎样询问呢？

背景知识⇁

1)“why not”（为什么不）常用于口语，有时还能译为“当然，好啊”。

2)“why not”还有另外一种用法，跟第一种用法不一样的是，它不能单独使用，它后面要加动词原形，表示“为什么不做某事”。例如：“Why not go to the library?”（为什么不去图书馆？），就相当于“Why don’t you go to the library?”（为什么不去图书馆？）。

3)“because”是“因为”，“so”是“所以”。在英语句子中，“because”和“so”这两个词是不可以同时出现的，但在翻译成汉语时可按汉语习惯翻译成“因为……，所以……”。

二 口语一点通

1I’m in a hurry. 我赶时间。

— Do you have a minute, Cary? 卡里，你有空吗？

— Sorry, I’m in a hurry now. 抱歉，我赶时间。

分析▲上面把“你有空吗？”说成“Do you have a minute?”，“a minute”在这里并不是指“一分钟”，而是表示“一点儿时间”，也可以改用“a second”或是“a moment”。若说成“a few minutes”，意思就变成了“可以耽误你几分钟的时间吗？”。

2 You should take some notes. 你们应该做一下笔记。

— This is important, so you should take some notes. 这点很重要，所以你们应该做一下笔记。

— Excuse me for a moment and I’ll get a pen and paper. 抱歉我要离开一下，我先去拿笔和纸。

分析▲“take some notes”中的“notes”是“笔记，备忘录”的意思，而“make（some）notes”和“take（some）notes”均可以表示“做笔记”；要离开一会儿的时候，可不能一声不吭就走开，至少得先和别人说一声“Excuse me”或“Excuse me for a moment”，这是英语中常用的礼貌用语。

3 Do you take many tests at school? 你们在学校常常要考试吗？

— Judy, do you take many tests at school? 朱迪，你在学校常常要考试吗？

— Yes, we have quizzes every week, but they are not so hard.嗯，每周都有小测，不过并不难。

分析▲“参加考试”是“take the test”；“通过考试”是“pass the test”。比“test”难度更大的“examination”常常简写成“exam”；“quizzes”是“quiz（＝a small test）”的复数形式。在美国，学校每周都会对前一周学过的内容，用测验的方式进行复习，这就叫“quiz”。

4 Do you often take business trips? 你经常出差吗？

— Do you often take business trips? 你经常出差吗？

— No, not so often. About once or twice a month. 不，不会经常出差。一个月大概一到两次。

分析▲“take business trips”是“take a business trip”的复数形式。这里为什么要用复数呢？各位只需想想出现在它前面的“often”，马上就能明白了。“take a trip”是“去旅行”的意思，由此可以衍生出如“take a short trip”“take a weekend trip”这样类似的短语表达，利用这种方法就可以轻松记下很多短语，举一反三。

5 Did I get any mail today? 今天有我的邮件吗？

— Did I get any mail today? 今天有我的邮件吗？

— There was a package for you from Japan.你有一件从日本寄来的包裹。

分析▲“mail”是指“邮件”（在英国多用“post”），相关词汇有很多。例如：

1) mailbox（信箱）（在英国多用“postbox”）

2) mailman（邮差）（在英国多用“postman”）

3) by mail（用邮寄的方式）（在英国多用“by post”）

4) post office（邮局）

6 Who is it? 请问是哪位？

— Someone’s knocking on the door. 有人在敲门。

— I’ll get it. Who is it? 我去开门。请问是哪位？

分析▲“Who is it?”是问门外的人“请问是哪位？”，可以直接回答“I’m Mary.”（我是玛丽。）。但在电话里告诉别人你是谁的时候，要用“This is Mary．”（我是玛丽。）或“This is Mary speaking.”（我是玛丽。）。
